Anna Stishova
I am a full-time mom, part-time copywriter, and paddlesports instructor. I have been paddling since my late teens, with kayaking being my favorite. I also enjoy white water rafting and recently got into stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), which my toddler loves to join.
I began kayaking to escape a strict family life and found freedom and friendship in paddling. After moving to the UK in 2003 and converting to Islam in 2004, I faced prejudice that kept me from paddling until a trip to Russia in 2011 rekindled my passion. Back in the UK, I joined a canoe club and transitioned from white water to marathon racing and now to SUP after a back injury.
My favorite aspects of kayaking include:
- The sensation of "flying" on water in flat water marathon racing.
- Focus, goals, and achievements, highlighted by participating in the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race.
- Teamwork and the sense of belonging to a paddling community.
- Connection with nature and the elements around me.
Challenges in the UK included financial barriers and the white-male-dominated environment. However, with movements like #ShePaddles and Muslim Scouts, the situation has improved, making it a great time for Muslim women to try paddlesports.
Advice for beginners:
- Join a canoe/kayak or SUP club and participate in taster and coached sessions.
- Always paddle with a buoyancy aid (PFD), carry a mobile phone in a waterproof pouch, and dress for water temperature.
- Take a Paddle Safer course by British Canoeing for professional knowledge.
For gear:
- Start with a buoyancy aid, water neoprene shoes, and a helmet for specific activities.
- Avoid long abayas for safety and opt for shorter dresses like a burkini suit or tunic and trousers.
- Choose a hood-style hijab or burkini hood for safety.
My favorite paddling spots are Coniston and Windermere Lakes in the Lake District. My best kayaking memories include completing the Devizes to Westminster race with my partner, Sirin Arif Gisel. I follow inspiring Muslim paddlers like Aisha Garwood and Saira Ishaq, new #ShePaddles ambassadors for 2022-2023.
My dream is to paddle in Norway, Greenland, and Iceland and see the aurora borealis. Paddlesports, whether kayaking, canoeing, rafting, or SUP, are excellent for physical and mental health, especially for women and girls. I encourage more Muslim women and girls to try paddlesports, whatever the weather!
